Published on July 14, 2010

July 14, 2010, Medicine Hat Alberta…On Thursday, August 12th, the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta's agriculture committee is inviting individuals involved or interested in agriculture to tour Canada's largest federal agriculture research facility- the Lethbridge Research Centre (LRC); the group will also stop at Corraini Essential Oils, a company located near Bow Island, focused on harvesting and distilling specialty crops into essential oils for the natural health product market. With networking potential, individuals will be provided an opportunity to meet with agricultural scientists, expand their knowledge of the LRC and emerging technologies, and observe a local operation that has made itself more competitive in the industry by successfully adding value to their crops beyond the field.

"The objective of this tour is to provide our local agriculture community an opportunity to gain an understanding of current research and development practices in the agriculture industry," said Sarah Herman, agriculture project coordinator for the EDA. "Ultimately, the goal is to allow participants a glimpse into the future of agriculture and get them thinking about integrating aspects of what they learn during this tour into their own operations."

The Lethbridge Research Station, operating within the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is focused innovation in the following areas: environment health, bioproducts and bioprocesses, sustainable production systems and food safety and nutrition. Developing sustainable and profitable crop production systems, the LRC also focuses significant research into new technologies for beef cattle production and beef quality. With limited space available, the deadline to register is Friday, August 6th. A payment of $25 per person is requested at the time of registration, cash or cheque can be made payable to the Economic Development Alliance. Breakfast, lunch and transportation are included; the bus will board at the Medicine Hat Stampede and Exhibition's Field House Parking Lot at 7:45 am and will return at 5 pm.
