Seeking Contractor for Research Position

We are seeking a university or college graduate or current student with an interest in biological, agricultural fields or applied technology to assist our business development team. 

The successful applicant would undertake basic research in areas of agriculture, renewal energy like bio-fuels or co-generation, and other business sectors and report to the Rural Business Development Officer.

We offer a supportive team environment, a one year contract for 500 hours at a rate of $20.00 per hour, with flexible hours and extensive experience and exposure to business development processes. The individual must live in southeast Alberta and be available to attend some meetings in Medicine Hat. The research may be conducted from a home office or those of the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta.

Project Scope

Economic growth and diversification will be assisted through the research conducted by the Research Assistant. This project will specifically:  Provide training, experience and mentorship to the Research Assistant;  Assist regional agricultural and technology businesses by provision of timely information; Provide extensive network opportunities to the participant to learn, enhance their experience and potentially find permanent employment.

The candidate will: 

  • Attend up to six bi-monthly meetings and work with the Agriculture Advisory committee of the EDA
  • Assist EDA staff and committee with projects that arise from the committee or reports
  • Expand the EDA database and business assistance materials, in order to disseminate appropriate information to companies
  • Participate in events relating to agriculture land owners like wind and solar farms, water stewardship, and alternate energy options for farms
  • Assist EDA staff in work related to building the capacity of rural Albertans to facilitate innovation.

The experiences will include: 

  • Working with skilled community development staff
  • Twelve month work experience with a high profile regional economic development agency
  • Knowledge of volunteer committees, conducting effective meetings; development of agendas, minutes, and report preparation
  • Introduction to hundreds of agriculture and technology related companies; learn firsthand about challenges and opportunities
  • Exposure to value added business opportunities relating to agriculture
  • Introductions to government programs and support services available to businesses
