LAST WEEK TO REGISTER FOR SOUTHERN ALBERTA SUMMER GAMES
Medicine Hat –The 2011 Southern Alberta Summer Games will take place in Medicine Hat from July 6-9, 2011 and the deadline to register for “Team Medicine Hat” is Monday, June 6 at 4:30 p.m.
Dr. Larry Henderson, Chairman of the 2011 Medicine Hat Host Committee, says, “We’re hoping for our community, as well as the residents in Cypress County and Redcliff to really jump on board and represent the ‘home teams’ with enthusiasm!”
The Southern Alberta Summer Games are meant to be the type of competition where anyone can participate, regardless of age or ability. The 26 events in the 2011 Games feature individual and team sports, as well as cultural competitions like chess, cribbage, photography and art. Some sports require pre-established training and equipment, like equestrian, golf, and archery, for example, while others encourage participants to try something for the first time, like the long jump or beach volleyball.
Medicine Hat last hosted the Southern Alberta Summer Games in 2000, which attracted over 2,200 athletes from across southern Alberta, and exhibited a Medicine Hat team of more than 600 participants from our community.
“I’m excited to top that number this year, not only to beat our previous home team size, but also because there is always friendly competition between each region to see who can attract the most participants and bring the largest and most enthusiastic teams,” says Medicine Hat’s Regional Director Jericka Versikaitis, who has participated in the Southern Alberta Games for the past seven years.
The games are open to anyone aged 5 to 95 years of age. Participants can register for up to three events. Registration fees vary by region, and include a Team t-shirt.
