Construction Sector Optimistic in Alberta

The total value of building permits in Canada took a nose dive in April, according to a Statistics Canada release this morning. The situation in Alberta was decidedly more optimistic, however, especially in regards to residential construction intentions.
Building permits are a leading indicator for activity in the construction industry and today’s data release should probably cause the most consternation for people working in the trades in southern Ontario. The value of building permits in Ontario plunged 33.5% from March and 17.1% from April 2010. Non-residential construction plunged even further, down 51.4% and 43.1%, over the same periods.
