Featured on the Daily Planet, a Discovery Channel program, Cancarb a Medicine Hat based company was highlighted for its crucial role in providing Thermax Powder N991, Carbon Black to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) shuttle program. Carbon Black is used in the liner systems for the booster separation motors (BSMs), ensuring that at the necessary time the BSMs ignite to separate the reusable solid rocket motors- responsible for providing the needed thrust at the launch of the shuttle. Cancarb is the world’s largest thermal carbon black manufacturing plant. Their products are found throughout the global marketplace including in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe.
“We congratulate Cancarb for this honor and for receiving the recognition that they deserve. The Discovery Channel is a reputable station and to have a Medicine Hat company like Cancarb featured on one of its segments, especially one relating to the last launch for NASA, positions southeast Alberta as a leader in innovation," said Tracy Heebner, Acting Director for the Economic Development Alliance of Southeast Alberta. "Cancarb is an internationally known business that aids in strengthening our local economy; they also are one example of many amazing companies we have in our region. “
Cancarb is committed to being environmentally responsible; in 2000, it added a waste heat recovery power plant which allowed the company to generate electricity from existing exhausted energy. This in return avoided releasing emissions of approximately 90,000 metric tons per year of greenhouse gases and eliminating the release of particulate matter into the climate.
